Ways To Smooth Your Parent’s Transition To Assisted Living

Making the transition from independent living to assisted living is an adjustment. Your parent may face challenges as they downsize or cope with aging. Support your parent and smooth the transition in several ways.

Make the Decision Together

Ensure your parent offers input into where they will live. Together, make a list of everything they want and need in an assisted living community. Then, begin touring facilities. Select a place that offers the physical support your parent needs, plus a nurturing, stimulating and friendly community.

Meet the Team

Meet with the staff member who will facilitate your parent’s move. This individual can offer invaluable advice, show your parent what their new room will look like, and review the included amenities. Be prepared to ask questions and clarify concerns as you strengthen this critical relationship.

Downsize Thoughtfully

Often, moving into assisted living requires downsizing. In this case, plan ahead and dedicate plenty of time to this task.

First, print out the floor plan, including measurements of your parent’s new room. Then, select and measure the furniture your parent uses every day. Arrange those pieces on your floor plan and make adjustments as needed. If necessary, your parent may need to select smaller, multi-purpose items for their space.

Next, sort possessions. Help your parent select their most treasured or sentimental possessions to move with them. Everything else can be given to loved ones, sold in an estate sale, donated to charity, recycled, or put in the trash.

Finally, ask for help. The downsizing process is emotional, and your parent may struggle to let go of the things that have surrounded them for decades. Consider hiring a professional organizer or asking loved ones and friends for assistance as you work through this project together.

Choose a Move-In Date

Select a target moving date as you help your parent prepare for the big day. Ideally, your parent will have plenty of time to pack, say goodbye to neighbors, and begin to transition mentally and emotionally to their new home and community.

Pack a First Night Box

Discuss your parent’s daily routine, and list all the essential items they use for health, well-being and comfort. Pack those items into a priority box that is unpacked and arranged first on move-in day. Possible essentials include medications, hygiene products, eyeglasses, dentures, hearing aids, telephone, comfort items, and favorite snacks.

Offer Professional Support

Many adults experience challenges as they age. Your parent, too, may struggle with grief, loss of mobility or limited autonomy as they prepare to move. Compile a list of helpful professionals, such as your parent’s primary care physician, spiritual advisor, close friends, or therapist who can help your parent adjust to this major life event. You could suggest supportive tools like mindfulness, chair yoga or meditation, too.
