Resident Spotlight: Patricia W.

Patricia W. was born and raised in Ohio. She had two nurturing parents, and she remembers a lot of laughter in the house. She had a brother that was 6 years older than her, and her parents adopted two of their cousins.

The Effects of World War II

During World War II, many universities trained the troops. Patricia studied art at Sullins College, an all-women’s university. Her brother served in the Air Force, and her boyfriend served as a fighter pilot in the Navy. Unfortunately, her boyfriend lost his life fighting for our country. Her husband, Nicholas also served during the war. He was in the 2nd wave that hit the beach in Normandy and lost a great deal of his unit there.

After two years at Sullins, Patricia went back to Ohio, where she worked in childcare. Upon return, she met her husband, Nicholas, a young man her parents met while she was away at college. They fell in love with him before she even had the chance.

Falling in Love in California

Patricia and her mother made a trip out to California to visit her brother in Glendale. While there they also visited Nicholas, whose family had recently moved to La Cañada. During her visit, Nicholas proposed. When they later married in 1948, everyone was very happy with their union.

Their first home was an apartment in Burbank, and one year later they bought a house in La Cañada. Nicholas worked as a salesman. Six years after they married, he bought a stationery and office supply store and a printing business. Patricia was a mother and housewife, but she prefers the title of “domestic goddess”. Raising their daughter, Candace brought her nothing but joy.

Patricia’s faith and relationship with Jesus Christ have played a prominent role in her life. She and her husband, along with four other couples, were part of a group that started Mariner’s Church. The church evolved out of a home Bible study. They recognized the need for a Christ-centered, Bible-teaching church, in Newport Beach. They began this work in 1964. It was an exciting experience to see how the Lord provided over the years. She shares that today, Mariner’s Church has over 4,000 members.

Moving Forward But Not Forgetting

Patricia remembers attending church with Nicholas and enjoyed spending time with him traveling. However, after 29 years of marriage, Nicholas passed away from cancer. She looks forward to their reunion.

After Nicholas passed away she traveled to Europe. She went to culinary schools in France and Rome. Patricia also took part in cooking groups in Newport Beach and Pasadena. These group brought in great chefs for classes. In addition to cooking, she also has a gift for interior design and did part time work as favors to friends. She enjoys the planning and getting to play with different colors and designs.

Today, Patricia has two grandchildren, Michael and Nicole. She is also great-grandmother to Nicole’s three teenagers. She enjoys spending time with them, and they always have great fun when they’re all together.
