Amelita was born June 28, 1941, in the Philippines. She was the third child of 11 children. With so many children running around, her mother also received help from babysitters. In addition to taking care of the children, her mother was also a school teacher. Amelita remembers her father as protective and strict. As a result, she spent most of her time going to school and shopping.

A Love of Numbers

Amelita earned a degree in Economics from the University of the Philippines at the age of 19. When she was 26, she moved to America. At the time, many of the people in the Philippines wanted to come to America as they saw it as the Land of Opportunity. She saw it as an opportunity for more freedom and made the move.

When she came to the United States, she lived in Manhattan. In New York, she took accounting courses at New York University. She saw accounting as more practical. Amelita later went on to work with Brooks Brothers and Trinity Church Corporation. On a trip back to the Philippines, she stopped in San Francisco, California. During her time there, she ended up staying for a new job opportunity. Soon after met her first husband on a blind date at a football game.

Love & Marriage

Amelita married her first husband in a chapel in Beverly Hills, California. But their marriage only lasted for 9 months before they divorced. Twelve years later she met her second husband, Thomas, a man who lived in her same apartment building. The two eloped on Valentine’s Day in Las Vegas. Fifteen years later they had a formal ceremony in a church and the two spent 31 years together. Amelita admired his kindness and the fact that he was always smiling. She remembers him as a very generous man.
