Coronary Heart Disease: Risks and How to Prevent

What is Coronary Heart Disease?

The term “heart disease” refers to several types of heart conditions. The most common type of heart disease in the United States is Coronary Artery Disease (CAD). This disease affects the blood flow to the heart. Decreased blood flow can cause a heart attack. Plaque buildup in the walls of the arteries supplying blood to the heart and other parts of the body causes Coronary Artery Disease.

What are the Causes?

Deposits of cholesterol and other substances in the artery make up plaque. Plaque buildup causes the inside of the arteries to narrow over time. This can partially or totally block the blood flow, which is a process called atherosclerosis.

Too much plaque buildup and narrowed artery walls can make it harder for blood to flow through your body. When your heart muscle doesn’t get enough blood, you may have chest pain or discomfort, called angina. Angina is the most common

symptom of CAD and is a serious condition.

Over time, the disease can weaken the heart muscle. This may lead to heart failure where the heart can’t pump blood the way that it should. An irregular heartbeat or arrhythmia also can develop.

If you have Coronary Artery Disease, there are a few things you can do to help lower your risk for heart attack or worsening heart disease. Pursing lifestyle changes, such as eating healthier and increasing physical activity can help. There are also medications to treat risk factors of CAD. Lastly, surgical procedures to help restore normal blood flow to the heart itself.
